There was a slight hiss from the desktop speakers then I heard “…you see we were waiting for you to slip up.” Tracy said.

“Why? We hadn’t done anything to you, we even rescued you from the bikers.” Chris said struggling against the bed sheets that were tying him down.

“Yes, you did and we know what you were going to do to us.” She said.

“We didn’t want to do anything with you and if you wanted to leave you could have.” He said.

“And leave this perfect sanctuary. Why leave when we can have it and use you like they used us.” She said slowly dragging the knife over his chest.

“But we could have worked it out. You just had to talk to either me, Marc or Jay.” Chris said.

She stopped the knife moving and looked slightly pissed off.

“Were is Marc?” She said digging the blade in enough to draw blood.

They didn’t know where I was that meant I had the upper hand for the moment. It also meant I needed to get to the armoury and lock that door before they could get inside it. Looking round the room I saw a small key safe, inside were keys to every door in the bunker each of them with identity tags. The only keys that I needed at the moment were the ones for the security office and the armoury. I quickly crossed the room unlocked the door and looked outside into the hallway there was no one out there. So I slipped out locking the door behind me and ran down to the armoury. Pulling on the door to make sure it was closed I locked it and pocketed the keys in my jeans. I was about to head toward the lifts when I heard its doors opening and hushed voices.

Quietly running to the range door I went inside and hid near the open door to listen.

“I am telling you the fucker is somewhere round here.” Said a female voice that I couldn’t place.

“Look if what Jay told me about him is right, then he is a crafty git.” Now that voice I did know, hello Mary.

“We just need to get some guns then we can just shoot him. He doesn’t know what’s happening and we have Chris and he is more than big enough for me.” The female voice laughed.

“Clare you’ve got a dirty mind girl.” Mary said.

Ah, so it’s Mary and Clare. So that leaves Lisa and Tracy to deal with after I sort these two out. I needed surprise and if they were headed to the armoury then they were in for a big one.

Sure enough one of them started swearing enough to make my ears burn.

“How the fuck is this door locked? All the fucking doors are unlocked except this one. Who the fuck locked this door?” Clare screamed.

“Clare calm down it had to have been either Chris or Marc. If it was Chris he has the key, but if it was Marc then we are screwed till we get the little fucker.” Mary said.

Kneeling at the door I decided that I had heard enough about them trying to kill me or worse. Launching myself out the door to lie on the ground. I saw Mary and Claire flinch to the sound of the door banging. I aimed at the nearest target and pulled the trigger. Feeling the rifle buck into my shoulder I watched as the shot hit Claire in the throat. Claire’s blood sprayed backwards hitting Mary’s shocked face. Mary turned to watch her friend fall forward grasping at the ragged hole that had once been her throat. I could hear the blood splatter the floor like a heavy rain fall, followed by Claire’s now dead body thump on the floor.

Taking aim at Mary I shouted “Don’t you move a fucking inch?”

She froze to the spot, like a rabbit does when it’s hit by headlights and knows it is about to die. Slowly getting to my feet I kept my rifle pointed her way. I walked up the hallway and as I past Claire’s dead body I gave it a kick to make sure she was dead. The last thing I wanted was for her to come back to life like some kind or horror monster. Pushing her with the rifle barrel I shoved her to the security room and unlocked the door and pushed her inside. She fell to the floor and started to cry.

I looked down at her and said “You can cut that shit as well. I know you’re faking it.”

Wiping the blood and fake tears from her face with a sleeve, and glared at me from the floor.

“You killed Claire.” She said as I locked the door.

“Yup, and one of you evil fuckers killed Jay. Who did it?” I asked in a quiet voice.

Looking round the room for some kind of escape she was starting to panic. I smiled because that was what I wanted. I fact I needed her to be close to panic, I had a small plan and it weighed on how much Tracy wanted Mary to live.

I pointed to the chair “Sit your lying arse on that seat, and if I see you move I will shoot you somewhere very painful.”

She stood up and flopped on to the seat, still casting daggers at me.

“Go to the keyboard and I want you to type Control and A. I’m watching and if you press anything else you’re going to need a doctor.”

“What happens when I do that?” Mary asked.

“Nothing for you to worry about. It just opens the broadcast system.” I replied.

She pressed the keys and we heard a load click from outside the room. The hallway speakers were working at least.

“What was that?” A voice spoke from the speakers on the desk.

“Tracy, its Marc he has…….BANG!” I fired the rifle close to Mary’s head drilling a hole in the wall opposite where she was sat.

She was going to have one hell of a ringing in her ears, if she lived past the next few hours.

“Mary? Mary are you alright?” Tracy screamed through the speakers.

“Hi Tracy, I’m sorry to say but Mary is a little busy at the moment.” I said out loud.

“You bastard what have you done to her and where is Claire?”

“Well Mary might need to see someone about her hearing. As for Claire, well part of her is covering Mary at the minute and the other part is dead as dog shit.” I said.

From the speakers I heard the familiar rumbling laugh from Chris.

“I’m going to fucking gut you.” Said another female voice from the speakers.

“Oh hi Lisa. I thought either Chris or Jay had nailed your skinny arse, but it seems not.” I said laughing.

“Claire was my sister you fucking waste of male sperm.” Lisa screamed.

“Now, now ladies I have a proposition for you all, and one that might help Mary here live to see another day.” I said.

There was quiet from the speakers and I decided that I needed to see my two enemies. Quickly pressing a couple of keys the large monitor burst into life. Mary cowered in the corner of the room holding her hands over her ears. I typed a quick command and six screens came up showing different perspectives of the room with Chris inside. From the original angle I hadn’t seen Lisa stood in the corner but with all six cameras working I could now see her.

The speakers hissed for a second and then Tracy said “Let me guess, we let Chris go, you both get to leave and we get Mary?”

“Nope you got that wrong. You let Chris go and one of you gets to walk out of the bunker alive.” I said.

“What’s stopping me from killing Chris right now?”

“Ok I’ll give you three reasons. One I have one of yours and I’m more than willing to kill her. Two I have the keys to the armoury and the third and final reason is I have control of the lifts.” With that I pressed Control and L which toggled the lifts on and off.

Mary launched across the room at me, but I was actually waiting for her and fire two shots at point blank range through her midsection. The two shots tore the muscle and shredded her lungs and heart before exploding out of her back to cover the wall, like a Jackson Pollock painting. The look of shock in her eyes and the sudden disappearance of that spark of life that was in them upset me. Her body slid to the floor with her head catching the chair sending it rolling across the floor.

“MARY!!?” Lisa screamed from the speakers.

“Ok so now it’s just you and Tracy now Lisa. One of you should go check on the lifts.” I said.

  Chapter Five

I watch as Tracy ran from the room and must have hea
ded to the lifts. Lisa was walking forwards and backwards across the room. Whilst I pushed Mary’s corpse outside into the hallway. The blood and remains of her intestines lay pooled on the floor where she had fell and I carefully stepped over them and sat in the chair waiting for Tracy to come back. Lisa had started to mumble and was slashing the air with a large knife from the kitchen. Tracy walked back into the room with her shoulders slumped and a look of despair on her face.

“He’s locked the lifts,” She said to Lisa who had stopped her pacing.

“What do we do? This was all your idea and now Claire and Mary are dead.” Lisa said wringing the handle of the knife.

“We don’t know Mary is dead.” Tracy said.

“Sorry to interrupt your little conversation, but Mary is dead. She had what you might call major surgery to remove her lungs and heart.” I needed to keep them both on edge. Yes it was risky for Chris, but I had also seen a small rift between Tracy and Lisa. I wanted that rift to become a chasm.

“First my sister and now my best friend.” Lisa screamed and started toward Chris with her knife raised.

“Lisa stop, we need him alive. Otherwise we aren’t going to be getting out of here.” Tracy said running to pull Lisa away from Chris. Lisa lashed out and pushed Tracy to the floor and started toward Chris again.

“I don’t care they’ve killed all that I had, so I’m going to take something he wants.” Lisa said with a growl.

Tracy climbed to her feet and launched at Lisa slamming her against the side of the bed. They both hit the floor in a tangle of legs and arms. I could see them thrashing around and I could see punches being thrown. Both of them were screaming and tearing at each other’s hair. I could never understand that. Why do women always seem to gravitate to pulling each other’s hair? I heard a loud scream and saw Lisa stagger to her feet. Tracy had somehow managed to get a hold of the knife and shoved it handle deep in to Lisa’s stomach.

Lisa’s hands were covered in blood from the handle of the knife as she tried to pull it from her stomach. Falling to her knees, she pulled and the knife came free with a sucking sound that I could hear through the speakers. What followed next wasn’t a pretty sight, Lisa’s intestines just seemed to roll out through the gaping hole the knife had left. She tried to stand but the blood and juices must have made the floor slippery, because she fell to the floor and lay crying till she died.

Tracy had gotten away with bruises and a few shallow cuts to her arms and hands. She lay on the floor beside the bed breathing heavily.

“Ok Tracy you get to leave.” I said.

“What?” She said in a weak voice.

“Cut Chris loose and you can leave the bunker.” I replied.

She looked over at Lisa and then up at the bed with Chris tied down. Now was the hard part, would she choose survival or a long drawn out death. She crawled over to the knife and picked it up. Again she looked at Lisa, then Chris and finally the knife. Pulling herself up by the bed she stood looking at Chris and the knife. After an age the knife slashed through the sheets that tied Chris down. He gently took the knife from her hand and looked up at the camera.

“Can you unlock the lifts mate?” He asked softly.

“Give me two minutes.” I answered.

My fingers have never moved so fast in my life. The lights showing the shutdown lifts changed and I heard the hum of the motors moving them in the shafts. After closing the screens down I walked to the lifts and waited for Chris and Tracy. I had just managed to get there when the doors opened and out stepped Chris carrying Tracy.

“What are we going to do with her?” I asked.

“I know we need to kick her out, but it just doesn’t feel right to do it while she is like this.” Chris said pointing at the cuts and gashes on Tracy.

“Let’s get her patched up then.” I said.

We looked for some first aid gear and after we finished patching Tracy up. We locked her in one of the rooms on the fourth floor. We headed for the first floor and the dining room, we passed Jay’s body lying on the floor.

“How the hell did they get you both?” I asked.

“When I was tied to the bed I heard Tracy say that Claire had managed to stab Jay as he left the dining room.” Chris said opening the door.

“That I sort of guessed that when she and Mary came looking for me. That still doesn’t tell me how they managed to tie you to the bed.” I said looking at him from the side. I had an idea of how they had managed to do it, but I wanted Chris to confirm it.

“Well, erm…Tracy said she wanted to ask me something in private. We went down to her room and one thing lead to another and she convinced me into to getting tied up.” He said going red.

“I had a feeling that was what happened.” I said.

“Yeah, well it happened and we had to deal with the consequences.”

I had to deal with it whilst he had been tied down, but I wasn’t going to say anything. I walked over to the kitchen, I turned on the kettle and found a couple of mugs. After making two cups of coffee. I went out and sat down at the table Chris was at, and passed him one of the mugs.

“So what happens now?” I asked.

“After we finish these, we best move the bodies outside. They’ll start to stink the place up if we don’t. Then clean up the best we can.” Chris said looking into the mug.

“I want to bury Jay, but those bitches can just rot out there.” I said feeling my anger start to rear its ugly head.

Chris just gave a large sigh and looked even more down.

“I’m sorry mate. How long did you know Jay for?” I asked.

“We had been mates since basic training. He was going to leave the Army this year. He said he wanted to start a family and work with his dad. I suppose it’s better for him this way.” Chris said in a low voice.

I watched as he slowly drank his mug of coffee. Slowly getting himself more and more down with each swallow. There wasn’t much I could do for him. I hadn’t dealt with anything like this my whole life. I mean yeah, I’d had deaths in the family and they had hit hard, but Chris was probably going through something worse. From the sounds of things Jay and Chris had been as close as brothers. I felt that he need some time to himself so I stood and left him sitting in the dining room. For the next four hours I dragged each of the bodies into a lift and then outside. With Jay I rolled him up inside a sleeping bag and dug a small grave. I stood over that grave for half an hour before I could bring myself to fill it in.

Taking some cleaning materials from the cupboard on the first floor I scrapped and cleaned as much blood and body parts as I could, from where the women had died. Going back the security room I watched Tracy curled up on her bed crying. Tell you the truth, I wanted to kick her out of the bunker with nothing but the clothes on her back. But I knew we would give her some supplies, after all we weren’t evil or anything like it. Flicking through the cameras I found Chris asleep at the table with his head on his arms. How could such a huge tough bloke like him, turn out to be such a sensitive soul? At the moment I could believe anything. I mean who could believe that the end of the world would be brought about by a zombie cat of all things.

Standing I headed for the first floor, the MP5 banging against my chest on the tactical sling. I had forgotten that I had it on me. Looking down I saw it covered in blood and dirt from when I dragged the bodies upstairs. Going to the armoury I grabbed a cleaning kit and sat in the library on the third floor trying to figure out how to take it apart and clean it. It took me two hours and I ended up searching the library for anything to help. There was a set of shelves set apart that had weaponry written above it. When I took a closer look I saw that it had manuals for all kinds of guns, searching the bookcase I found a large manual that had MP5 written on the side. Taking it to a table in the centre of the room, I sat down and read through it and found it had an idiots guide to stripping down the rifle. Now I can be a bit of an idiot at times so I slowly followed the instructions and had it stripped and cleaned fairl
y quickly. After making sure it was in working order I stood to go back to the security office.

Flicking through the cameras I saw that Chris had moved from the dining room and was asleep in one of the officers’ quarters. Tracy had stopped her wandering in her room and sat looking at a blank wall. I sat watching them both when my stomach rumbled. I’d been on the go from first thing this morning and I hadn’t had anything to eat since breakfast. I headed to the dining room and kitchen to grab some food for myself and Chris. I hummed and hawed about if I should feed Tracy, but after what Chris said I decided I better. The sandwiches weren’t great but they would do for the time being. Grabbing a couple of bottles of water I headed for Chris’ room first. Opening the door I saw him lying on his side with his back to me.

“Chris I’ve got something for you to eat mate.” I said.

“I’m not hungry.” Came the rumbled reply.

“You need to eat.” I said walking over to the bed.

“Fine leave it on the table and get the fuck out.” He said rolling over to look at me through his red puffy eyes.

I put the food on the table and headed for the door.

“Marc…” I turned round to look at him “I’m sorry I swore at you mate. Thanks for the food.”

“Hey look I bet you would have done the same for me.” I replied.

He nodded and rolled back over on to his other side. I left and headed down to the room that Tracy had been locked up in. Taking the key I unlocked the door and pushed it open. Half expecting Tracy to come jumping out at me. I saw that she was still sitting on the bed looking at the wall with a blank expression on her face. Putting the food and bottle of water down just inside the door. I closed it and walked back to the room I had been using. Sitting down at the small coffee table, I now had time to think of what had happened. I still couldn’t get my head round why the women had thought we were going to treat them in the same way the bikers did and to take that to the point where they kill Jay. Nope I just couldn’t think of it.
